TOBACCO POLITICS
- Presidential Conventions and Tobacco Money
- ScarcNet's Mother Jones Alert Tobacco Strikes Back wins praise.
- ELECTION EDITORIAL: Term Limits: Giving Power Back to Big Business Why Tobacco loves term limits
- 10/15/96 Tobacco Report Card Issued State-by-state tally of the 104th Congress--who's taking tobacco money and who's fighting tobacco control legislation!
A bombshell from SmokeFree Action.
WSJ has it, if you're subscribed - PIRG's Congressional Scorecard Great. A quick and easy way to see your state representatives' votes on all the issues.
- 10/20/96 Soft Money Database Choose as State "NY", and alphabetical "P", for example, to see PM's "soft money" contributions reported to the FEC. The FECInfo Site has lots more resources on PACs.
- Congressional Quarterly's Vote Watch See where your rep landed. (CQ's database on "tobacco" keyword is still poor--just June 12, 1996: "Prohibit Funding for Certain Tobacco Programs," which was not a key vote, IMHO.)
- Congressional Quarterly's On the Job Look up your rep's profile, recent speeches, etc.
- Advise the Republican National Committee on their platform (Do so quickly; the platform will be set by the first week in August.) Volunteer at this site.
- Visit the Democratic National Committee Volunteer at this site.
- DOLE: "Just Cut Out the Advertising"
- See a collection of Dole tobacco documents stretching from the Nation's 1987 article to a 1989 PM memo referenced by ABC's "Never Say Die" to the hot Katie Couric interview on Jack's site
- Dole Turns National Attention to Tobacco Money in Politics
- And check out the Republicans for Clinton page, which has a number of articles about the Dole/tobacco connection
- The "name the author of the quote" game: Dole or Tobacco lobbyist? You make the call. Courtesy of Mother Jones.
- Elizabeth Dole is head of the American Red Cross, which has been criticized for conspicuously omitting any mention of smoking in its "Healthy Life-Style IQ Quiz." But ARC has exactly one piece of health advice in regards to smoking on its Red Cross WebSite
- Butt-Mania Online Oh, those whacky collegiate Dems. Some info on Dole and tobacco, and a campaign to encourage him to "kick his nasty habit of taking huge contributions from the tobacco industry and the then acting as Big Tobacco's spokesman"
- Dissect an Ad from PBS. Current featured ad: Dole's "Daisy" ad using the old LBJ ad to say the current threat to kids is not nuclear war, but drugs.
- A pro-Clinton piece based primarily on his stand on tobacco; from North Carolina. Or is this all just a cynical dance, orchestrated by the industry? A criticism of Tobacco BBS's treatment of Clinton
