Writing Letters for Tobacco Control
- The FDA coment period is over. But don't forget OSHA! The situation is serious. See the ScarcNet Alert.
OSHA's proposed regulation of workplace smoking also has generated a massive outpouring from the tobacco industry--OSHA has received an unprecedented 100,000 comments--most reportedly reflecting the industry's postion.
OSHA had proposed a smoking ban in workplaces a year ago, and was supposed to have come to a final ruling by the end of this year, but the rule-makeing process, according to the Legal Times, has been gummed up by:
- The agency being flooded with of tens of thousands of comments instigated by tobacco interests.
- The OSHA hearings being dragged out for months by tobacco interests.
- Threats by tobacco interests to seek Congressional action to block implementation of any adverse rulings.
- The ongoing threat of being "defunded" by a Congress which has received an unprecedented amount of tobacco contributions this year.
