Lorillard's Marvel Comic Ad
Lorillard's Marvel Comic Ad

See a larger version.
See the ad alongside the incredibly complementary (colors, lettering, graphic design, etc.) facing page.
Note the incredibly similar graphic elements on the facing page of the "Fantastic Four."
Presumably, the drawing style of the Thing's multi-faceted body would be known to Lorillard and its artists, but even beyond that we have on the facing page:
LOTS of smoke elements
IDENTICAL direction of action in the bottom right frame, directing attention straight up to the ad. The reader is clearly invited to go from that frame and take the steps into the Lorillard ad.
IDENTICAL orange/dark red/blue color scheme
"SHRANGG" is virtually the same size, color and font as "TOBACCO" and "WHACKO."
Can 2 facing pages this uncannily alike be accidental? Or on the other hand, maybe those 6 monkeys on 6 typewriters could turn out the works of Shakespeare, given, oh, say, 2 weeks.
Of course, one final question is if a page this intense, this graphically rich (far outshining the similar comic page next to it) communicates whether "whacko" is bad or -- really cool!
