The book is set in the middle of the 20th century; Amadeo Terra lies paralyzed from a stroke, assumed brain-dead, in a hospital. With his body condemned to the purgatory of immobility, his mind charges to and fro within his memory. A respected cigar roller, a 300-pound philanderer, a joker and a smoker incapable of love, . . . . his mastery of the art of cigar rolling, which Medina explains expertly. . . . It's hard to tell whether Medina intends the Cuban cigar to symbolize old-time Cuba, machismo, ultimate pleasure or perfection -- possible when rolling a cigar, impossible when living a life, as Terra's recollections make abundantly clear.

- Her struggle to end a two-pack-a-day problem will be familiar to anyone who's tried to kick the habit; her version of suffering includes eating too many lollipops, yelling at her husband and encountering writer's block. To make quitting easier, Shapiro visits a psychologist who specializes in addictions and finds herself both repulsed and drawn to his aggressive style, which involves following his advice without question for a year. And what do you know: after several months, Shapiro's cigarette cravings diminish--but she finds she's addicted to her therapy sessions and looks forward to them in the same way that a smoker thinks of her next drag. More seriously, the removal of Shapiro's literal smoke screen reveals aspects of her life--family and relationship issues--that she's neglected for decades.

The Tobacco Road
I have published a book of letters written as a young man in 1928/29 by my late uncle. He was sent to Kentucky by his father to learn the tobacco trade (the family business in Hamburg, Germany), and worked for the Kentucky Tobacco Co., there in Louisville and other places in the State. He did so well he was sent by the Louisville company to run their office in Shanghai. Two weeks after arriving there he appears to have committed suicide. He was only 21. The book ends (before the index) with the Shanghai newspaper report of the death and the discovery of the body, as well as some supplementary correspondence between Herbert's father and the Jewish burial society in Shanghai regarding the young man's gravestone. I think it is an interesting historical document, as well as a dramatic mystery, as there is no clear indication as to why the young man took his life.

- Then what affects our ability to find happiness and fulfillment? The answer, it turns out, is best approached in reverse -- by finding what destroys happiness and fulfillment.
"Alcohol and tobacco are devastating," Vaillant said.
"The surprise is that cholesterol is not important, and weight is relatively minor. At 50, weight showed up as a problem, but at 70 it just wasn't important.
"But smoking is more important with each advancing year ... What we find out is that if you pay attention to alcohol abusers, they are the heavy smokers. They die more rapidly. So alcohol is a risk factor for heavy smoking. As a result, many don't die of alcohol abuse, they die of smoking abuses."

Tobacco Control: Comparative Politics in the United States and Canada

Edition: Paperback
- This is the first book to compare the politics of tobacco control in the United States and Canada. Tobacco control has arisen as a major public policy issue only over the past few decades and has become increasingly controversial in both countries. In contrast to the usual process of Canada borrowing policies from the United States, the United States has developed policies on tobacco control partially based on Canadian examples. Through the Tobacco-Free Initiative of the World Health Organization, tobacco control is reaching the global level. This book is a revealing exploration and comparison of the development of North American policies and the influence these policies are having in the attempt to regulate a major international business in the interests of public health.
You Are the Target
By Georgina Lovell
- The vault holding the secrets and deception are blown apart and light is shed on corporate secrets previously seen only behind closed doors and in courts of law. Now, the strategies, tactics and techniques used to keep the public in the dark have arrived in the public domain. You Are The Target tells the truth about the tobacco industry, whose profits have been put before the health of children and youth, women and men. Meticulous research and detailed documents support each disclosure about an industry that must recruit thousands of new smokers, predominantly youth, every day to replace those who quit or die, an industry whose research scientists refer to smokers as "nicotine addicts", and whose executives make public statements claiming smoking cigarettes is no more harmful than applesauce. . .

Cigarette Art when Smoking was King, January 9, 2001
Reviewer: A reader from Brooklyn, NY USA
I'm not a habitual cigarette smoker, but I'm a sucker for vintage packaging design, as well as books about such design. This medium-sized "coffee table" book is well produced and would be an inspiration to anyone interested in graphic design, typography, advertising, and of course smoking. Anthropologists may also be interested in the use of similar icons (i.e. airplanes, reclining women and tigers) that pop up on cigarette packages from a wide range of different countries/cultures. It's a sad thing that you don't find such sumptuous art on cigarette packages anymore - this book shows that the golden age of cigarettes (and also of product design) is long gone. But I'm glad it's being showcased in this book to share with later generations!

Over the past twenty-five years, a formidable social movement has emerged in response to this vital public health problem. How has the tobacco control movement become such a significant force in shaping contemporary public policy, social norms, and the habits of millions of Americans? The Fight against Big Tobacco develops two central arguments to answer this question. First, the movement was able to grow rapidly by building upon a rich "infrastructure" of health organizations and networks of health professionals. Second, the movement has an integral relationship with government, one that Wolfson categorizes as state-movement "interpenetration." While these factors have contributed to the rapid growth of the tobacco control movement, and to its influence, they have also constrained the strategies and tactics available to movement activists. Wolfson uses survey data, extensive interviews, and archival sources to chart the early emergence and widespread growth of the movement in Minnesota, a state that has led the nation in tobacco control activism and policy. He also draws upon secondary data and sources to place the Minnesota experience within a broader national context. As the claims against tobacco manufacturers and the defenses of industry lobbyists and corporate communications offices have often collided, this study lends itself nicely to the social constructionist approach adopted here. This book will be adopted in courses on social problems, social movements, and public health, and will also be of interest to general readers.

The proliferation of lawsuits against the tobacco industry has had profound implications for American health policy, tort law, civil law, and welfare and social policy. Since the publication of Rabin and Sugarman's Smoking Policy, class action suits, FDA regulation, clean air legislation, health insurance reimbursement, and extensive advertising have brought tobacco to the forefront of national and public policy debates. This collection includes essays by eleven leading public health experts, economists, physicians, political scientists, and lawyers, whose activities encompass Congressional testimonies, Surgeon General's reports on youth smoking, and clinical trials for drugs for smoking cessation. They analyze specific strategies that have been used to influence tobacco use--including taxation, regulation of advertising and promotion, regulation of indoor smoking, control of youth access to cigarettes and other tobacco products, litigation, and subsidies of smoking cessation--and set them against the latest scientific findings about tobacco use and the changing cultural and political setting against which policy decisions are being made.
Tobacco: A Cultural History of How an Exotic Plant Seduced Civilization

Iain Gately's Tobacco is a sweeping cultural history of the world's most prevalent addiction, and it's probably the best book ever written on its subject. Gately begins in pre-Columbian America, where the natives made tobacco "their most popular gift to the rest of humanity," and continues through all the cantankerous smoking litigation of the 1990s. The story touches on just about every subject imaginable: tobacco in literature, the movies, and society. It would be wrong to call Gately an advocate of smoking, but he clearly takes pleasure, for example, in noting that Hitler's Nazis launched one of history's most vigorous anti-smoking initiatives. The book is full of delicious trivia: Many of Shakespeare's contemporaries smoked, but there's no evidence that the Bard himself did, and none of his plays make any mention of smoking; he "kept his writing a smoke-free zone." Nevertheless, reports Gately with a smirk, there is "archaeological evidence proving that smoking was going on around the Shakespeare household in Stratford-upon-Avon during his life." Smoking aficionados won't want to miss Tobacco, and it's a much healthier gift for them than a box of cigars. --John Miller

Alright, so I know Andy Hill, and my family plays a role in this business management/sports memoir book, which explores the life-lessons of legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden. True, the book has nothing to do with tobacco, but there is a tiny bit involving Wooden's regrets over a player he disciplined for smoking. Sorry. But it's a terrific read about how to get things done, and the importance of strong fundamentals--and it's getting great reviews! Well-heeled private interests have learned how to manipulate journalism and public discourse on fundamental public health, environmental and political issues through the sophisticated use of public relations, bogus experts and junk science. In Trust Us, We're Experts Rampton and Stauber do the extraordinary and groundbreaking job of exposing these sleazy practices and rigorously holding them up to the light of day. - But what should the good guys do? For example, it is interesting to note that, of the 26 countries with the highest percentage of smokers, only one, Japan, is not a developing country. More Colombians die today from diseases caused by U.S. tobacco than do Americans from Colombian cocaine. The book has a large number of such disjointed facts.

- To illuminate 1930s life, Brendon details what people wore, ate and drank. Apologizing for offering "little or nothing about science, religion, philosophy, music, and high culture," he also confesses to "the poverty of the female dimension." However, if one wants to learn what people smoked, apparently a profoundly symbolic preoccupation, his book will be authoritative. His own father, we learn, puffed Gitanes, his mother an English brand. OGPU operatives in Russia lit up Belomor, Stalin preferred Herzegovina Flor (even stuffing it in his Dunhill pipe), Voroshilov liked a "strong, black papirosa," Orwell rolled repellent black shag tobacco, desperate Spaniards filled cigarette papers with "sliced liquorice root," Chiang chain-smoked Pirates and Laval "Gitanes, Gauloises, Camels, anything."

- And they looked with great interest to the medicinal and other effects of tobacco, which was at first a curiosity to the Virginia settlers, later their source of economic salvation. The book describes reactions ranging from the promise that tobacco could help insomniacs, who could count on smoking to help them "remaine as dedde people . . . thei bee so eased in suche sorte that when thei bee awakened of their slepe, thei remaine without wearinesse . . . and be muche the lustier." King James, to his credit, saw things differently, noting that tobacco made "a kitchin of the inward parts of man, soiling and infecting them with an unctious and oily kinde of soote."

- "Speed Week is good, twisted fun, cheerfully subversive. The chamber of commerce should hate it, which is the highest possible compliment for any Florida novel." Now Date returns with Smokeout, and if the powers that be hated the first one, the second one will send them to bed with the vapors. A tobacco bill has been introduced into the Florida state legislature, and on its passage rests the livelihoods-and, in some cases, the lives of many of the state's finest denizens. . . Smokeout is a delight from start to finish-one might even say addictive.

- Over the past two decades, first under the Tories and now under new Labour, the health-promotion industry has re-educated the nation around its "Big Four" injunctions: stop smoking, eat a low-fat diet, drink alcohol in moderation and take regular exercise. Many who now suffer from Bridget Jones syndrome, slavishly counting their daily cigarettes, calories and units of alcohol, might need a stiff drink when they discover that giving up smoking is the only one of the four proven to have significant health effects. And even here, there are major doubts about the real risk of passive smoking, the prime target of the tobacco wars of today. Yet, despite the inability of an army of researchers to find hard evidence to support many of its claims, the health-promotion industry has won broad support from the political parties and from the public.

Milton quotes liberally from his sources, retaining the original eccentric spelling. Thomas Harriott, an academic, realised that tobacco could hold the key to the revival of any interest in colonisation. 'The leaves thereof being dried and brought into pouder,' he wrote, 'they [the Indians] use to take the fume or smoke thereof by sucking it through pipes made of claie, into their stomacke and heade. It purgeth superflous fleame and other grosse humors [and] openeth all the pores and passages of the body.' "

- In this provocative book, C. Edwin Baker argues that print advertising seriously distorts the flow of news by creating a powerfully corrupting incentive: the more newspapers depend financially on advertising, the more they favor the interests of advertisers over those of readers. Advertising induces newspapers to compete for a maximum audience with blandly "objective" information, resulting in reduced differentiation among papers and the eventual collapse of competition among dailies.

- Written for both lay and professional readers, this book offers new approaches to understanding addiction and the public policies necessary to successfully battle its detrimental effects on society. The author explains why current policies are ineffective and how they fail to cure the "problem." He argues that they actually encourage addiction by allowing people to feel blameless for the consequences of their choices.
Addiction is a choice, not a disease.
'Addiction' is a fine old English word meaning commitment, dedication, devotion, inclination, bent, or attachment. Particular addictions may be good or bad. Some folk are addicted to music, others to books, others to walks in the country. Some are addicted to a religious doctrine or community, be it the Roman Catholic, the Mormon, or the Zen Buddhist. Others are... read more

From Kirkus Reviews:
- Combining brilliant scholarship with a novelist's feel for human drama, Orey recounts how a determined group of lawyers and whistle-blowers brought the tobacco industry to its knees. Wall Street Journal editor Orey opens his odyssey in rural Mississippi, where in 1986 attorney Don Barrett began a decade-long holy war against Big Tobacco. . . . A tale of breathtaking, even Homeric, scope, filled with greed, good intentions, and a collection of deeply flawed ``heroes''; scholars and the general reader will find ample reasons to rejoice.

- Not only does this lively discussion of the tobacco litigation provide insight into the recent and historical controversies, but it also follows along with the concepts taught in microeconomics. The Tobacco Wars presents the economic theory surrounding the tobacco wars as a creative dialogue between an economist, a historian and a tobacco industry executive. The conversation between these three fictional key players illustrates the real-life issues and controversies currently at play and asks the readers to make up their own minds, and reach their own conclusions.

- Vancouver Province: Though another one of Bridget's goals is to quit smoking, she never comes close. At the top of each entry Bridget also records the number of "fags" she's smoked. She does manage a few days without lighting up but, over the course of the book, she smokes 5,277 cigarettes. "'Just going to change!' I said, smiling smarmily at Mum, rushed up to bedroom, opened the window and lit up a Silk Cut. Then I noticed (brother) Jamie's head sticking out of the window one floor below, also having a fag. Two minutes later the bathroom window opened and an auburn-coiffed head stuck out and lit up. It was Mum."

- Author's translation of the summary:
- Narghile, as a soft drugs use mode, foremost tobacco, is more akin to a gentle art of smoking (Dunhill) just the same way there are "proper drinking" or "proper eating (cooking)" arts, and more generally, to a real "art de vivre". Defined this way, it reveals its micro-social cohesion function and hence, of prevention. Moreover, to those who consider that smoking hours and hours in such a "quaintly" way cannot be but like not less queer "idle" individuals to, the so-called "idlers" bring against a real rapture discourse that could be well legitimated by this "right to lazziness (sloth)" (Droit a la paresse) politically claimed as far back as the XIXth century by Paul Lafargue. Poetical object, peace symbol, promising, its social use - an area extending from China to Tunisia, and from Greece to South Africa - over four centuries, still remains striking to any observer. Anthropology, history and geography, not to forget the aesthetic universe of some "orientalist" artists, allow to give back life to this strangely ignored object. The author definitely shatters some stereotypes: "Neither heroin is smoked in it nor is the bubbling water inside boiling !" This [comprehensive] book is the very first one to tackle narghile from all these angles.
The Tobacco Epidemic
The Tobacco Epidemic (Progress in Respiratory Research, Vol. 28)
by C. T. Bolliger (Editor), Karl-Olov Fagerstrom (Editor)
Hardcover
Published by S. Karger Publishing
Publication date: October 1997
ISBN: 3805565313
- Today it is a well-established fact that cigarette smoking is fundamentally a form of addiction to the drug nicotine. However, this does not mean that smoking can entirely be explained in terms of pharmacological factors - as with any drug addiction, social, economic, personal and political influences all play an important part in determining patterns of prevalence and cessation. This publication provides a comprehensive, up-to-date review of tobacco smoking. Written by internationally acknowledged experts, the 15 chapters of the book cover the history, economics, epidemiology, and psychology of tobacco use.

- 07/09/97 BOOKS: "Breathless: An Asthma Journal" Boston Globe
- Louise DeSalvo . . . makes the case that the person with asthma lives, in fact, a more terrifying, horrific life. . . The author . . . is one of more than 10 million Americans - the number is growing alarmingly - who suffer from asthma. . . DeSalvo's own difficulties include, for instance, the trials of eating out: She must "screen the restaurant in advance to ask if they permit smoking anywhere . . ."
- In 1996, China's 300 million smokers consumed 1.68 trillion cigarettes, making that country the single largest tobacco market in the world. China's tobacco market is more than three times larger than the cigarette market in the United States, where there were 46 million smokers and 487 billion cigarettes sold last year. More than three years in the making, Tobacco China is an economic, financial, brand-tracking, marketing, and public policy manual that addresses China's tobacco industry at the national, provincial and factory levels. "Tobacco China is the most comprehensive collection of tobacco market information ever complied on the world's largest market," commented TMA President Farrell Delman.

BOOKS: "HOLY SMOKE" Published in US POSTNet ("hot off the wires"--expires quickly)
- It is no surprise that "Holy Smoke", first published in England in 1985, is now being published in the United States. [A]s Cuban novelist and cigar connoisseur Guillermo Cabrera Infante would cheerily agree, where there is smoke there is literature, and this is a dazzling, if at times exhausting, tour de force . . Cabrera Infante discusses anything from the Spanish Conquest and U.S. comedians to etiquette, the history of matches, song lyrics and the proper way to light a cigar.

Toxic Sludge is Good for You! Lies, Damn Lies, and the Public Relations Industry by John Stauber and Sheldon Rampton of PR Watch $16.95 Cheap!
In one segment Dr. Judith Mackay relates her epic fight against tobacco in Asia.
Judith Longstaff MacKay's contribution is one of the more captivating. MacKay has worked for years to combat smoking in China, Mongolia, and other parts of Asia; she helped launch Hong Kong's aggressive antismoking program of 1987 -- including a ban on the importation or sale of smokeless tobacco -- despite pressures from U.S. Senator Robert Dole and others who threatened to retaliate with trade restrictions. MacKay notes with deserved satisfaction that Hong Kong today vies with Singapore for having the lowest prevalence of smoking in the world, though she also warns that in Asia as a whole the habit continues to spread -- and rapidly.

- "The Civil War had swept away her wealth. Chess has only her pride and a patent on a tobacco machine that needs the right man to fulfill its promise. With a heart committed to another man's wife and a raging ambition, Nate Richardson agrees to marry Chess. It seems they both get what they want."
Our Berkeley critic Larry Breed says this tempestuous fictional novel by the author of "Scarlett" (the sequel to "Gone with the Wind") has some useful and interesting tobacco related material, from the back breaking labor-intensive agricultural practices, tobacco auctions, early advertising, the advent of mechanization, to international sales. To find this however, one must read through the sexual exploits of the two main characters. Beware - do not read this to learn the real history of the times; the best example, the fictional Nate beats the very real Buck Duke(!).
