I have published a book of letters written as a young man in 1928/29 by my late uncle. He was sent to Kentucky by his father to learn the tobacco trade (the family business in Hamburg, Germany), and worked for the Kentucky Tobacco Co., there in Louisville and other places in the State. He did so well he was sent by the Louisville company to run their office in Shanghai. Two weeks after arriving there he appears to have committed suicide. He was only 21. The book ends (before the index) with the Shanghai newspaper report of the death and the discovery of the body, as well as some supplementary correspondence between Herbert's father and the Jewish burial society in Shanghai regarding the young man's gravestone. I think it is an interesting historical document, as well as a dramatic mystery, as there is no clear indication as to why the young man took his life.

But what should the good guys do? For example, it is interesting to note that, of the 26 countries with the highest percentage of smokers, only one, Japan, is not a developing country. More Colombians die today from diseases caused by U.S. tobacco than do Americans from Colombian cocaine. The book has a large number of such disjointed facts.

To illuminate 1930s life, Brendon details what people wore, ate and drank. Apologizing for offering "little or nothing about science, religion, philosophy, music, and high culture," he also confesses to "the poverty of the female dimension." However, if one wants to learn what people smoked, apparently a profoundly symbolic preoccupation, his book will be authoritative. His own father, we learn, puffed Gitanes, his mother an English brand. OGPU operatives in Russia lit up Belomor, Stalin preferred Herzegovina Flor (even stuffing it in his Dunhill pipe), Voroshilov liked a "strong, black papirosa," Orwell rolled repellent black shag tobacco, desperate Spaniards filled cigarette papers with "sliced liquorice root," Chiang chain-smoked Pirates and Laval "Gitanes, Gauloises, Camels, anything."

And they looked with great interest to the medicinal and other effects of tobacco, which was at first a curiosity to the Virginia settlers, later their source of economic salvation. The book describes reactions ranging from the promise that tobacco could help insomniacs, who could count on smoking to help them "remaine as dedde people . . . thei bee so eased in suche sorte that when thei bee awakened of their slepe, thei remaine without wearinesse . . . and be muche the lustier." King James, to his credit, saw things differently, noting that tobacco made "a kitchin of the inward parts of man, soiling and infecting them with an unctious and oily kinde of soote."

Our Berkeley critic Larry Breed says this tempestuous fictional novel by the author of "Scarlett" (the sequel to "Gone with the Wind") has some useful and interesting tobacco related material, from the back breaking labor-intensive agricultural practices, tobacco auctions, early advertising, the advent of mechanization, to international sales. To find this however, one must read through the sexual exploits of the two main characters. Beware - do not read this to learn the real history of the times; the best example, the fictional Nate beats the very real Buck Duke(!).
