Two Journalists Attempt to Extinguish the Smoke
New Book is the First Complete Anti-Smoking Manual
WASHINGTON – Goody L. Solomon and German Munoz are soldiers of a different war. Their war comes without fire and smoke is their enemy. Butt In (now available through 1stBooks Library) is the first complete anti-smoker’s manual by Solomon and Munoz.
This manual is unique because it shows why and how individuals and public interest groups can and need to assure a smoke free home, workplace and community, the authors notes.
“(It) combines a concise, graphic picture of tobacco’s fatal flaws with easy anti-smoking steps for individuals who cannot give the time or lack the personality as well as the wherewithal to labor for social causes,” the authors state.
Written in a classic journalism style, the early part of the book briefly explains why people need to live smoke free. Within the smoke free pages, readers will find essential scientific findings about the addictiveness of nicotine and health dangers of tobacco smoke to smokers and others, how the tobacco industry escaped damaging evidence and how the industry promotes its interest to policy makers. Also included is a recount of local and state successes and failures on the attempt to control tobacco use.
The bulk of the book is an extensive list of names and addresses of national and grass roots organizations committed to snuffing out smokers’ ways. Solomon and Munoz also include resources for “would-be quitters.” The last part of the book highlights success in the “war on smoking” since 1965.
“This book pulls together in a single source the information and advice that will help build a bigger army of anti-smoking warriors with a substantial arsenal of weapons and money,” the authors state.
Solomon is the executive editor of Food Nutrition Health News Service, which she founded in 1991, as well as an award-winning newspaper columnist with a self-syndicated column that was featured weekly in numerous metropolitan papers nationwide. She has a uniquely varied experience writing for business publications and consumer outlets.
Munoz has worked with Solomon since 1988. Currently, he is the associate editor of Food Nutrition Health News Service. As a bilingual freelance journalist, he has contributed to a myriad of publications in Washington and Latin America.
