Little changes equal big health-care savings

If the equivalent of $10 a person was put into programs to promote healthy behaviors and prevention, Utahns would save more than $89 million within five years, according to a national report on disease prevention.

The Trust for America's Health released its "Prevention for a Healthier America" report Thursday morning, including a state-by-state look at cost savings that could top $16 billion nationally through community-based efforts including smoking prevention, nutrition improvement and activity-friendly environments.

Springville and Orem pass bans on smoking: Official says it's about health, not morality; a countywide ban will now be considered

You can't smoke 'em even if you've got 'em in Springville and Orem city parks.
The two Utah County cities are banning outdoor smoking on public property, and Jen Tischler hopes others do the same.
"We're just excited that it's going forward," said Tischler, the Utah County Health Department's education specialist. She and a teen anti-tobacco group called Outrage are leading the charge to make parks in the county smoke-free.
Similar bans have been approved farther north by, among others, Salt Lake County, Salt Lake City, West Valley City, Holladay and Draper.

Scientists uncover the genes that can lead to a life-long smoking addiction

A particular set of genes can turn a teenager who experiments with tobacco into a life-long addicted smoker, research shows.

Around 40 per cent of people with European origins have 'high-risk' versions of the genes, which affect the brain's sensitivity to nicotine.

They are in danger of getting hooked if they start smoking before 17, scientists found. . . .

Scientists at the University of Utah studied 2,827 smokers, taking DNA samples. They looked for changes in the genetic code, known as single nucleotide polymorphisms, linked to nicotine addiction.

About the study on smoking

Researchers identified a high-risk "haplotype," or linked, small variations in a single unit of DNA, that affects nicotine receptors in the nervous system. Smokers who began before 17 and had two copies of the haplotype had from a 1.6-fold to almost 5-fold increase in risk of heavy smoking as an adult.

Anti-Tobacco Campaign Tests Lung Capacity, Determination and Tobacco Awareness in 'Miley Mania Adventure'

Pop culture, anti-tobacco awareness and physical endurance merged last Friday in The TRUTH's 'Miley Mania Adventure' in Salt Lake City. Utah's smoking rates are the lowest in the nation, thirty-eight percent fewer high school students smoke today than they did in the early days of the state-wide The TRUTH campaign in 1999. The campaign's youth-focused efforts continue to help drive smoking rates down in Utah thanks, in part, to events like last week's "Miley Mania Adventure" in Salt Lake City.

LETTER: Macey’s heath stand hypocritical

Lately I can't for the life of me figure out why Macey's has taken part of Associated Foods' discontinuation of the selling of cigarettes without also halting the sales of beer.

My guess is that it's mostly centered around profit, not the franchise concerned about health, because if they were really concerned about health they would have also stopped selling beer . . .

So try this one on for size: Nearly 50 percent or more of all fatalities in the U.S. every year since 1982 have been from alcohol related fatalities

Cottonwood Heights is the latest city to prohibit puffing in parks.
The City Council voted this week to ban smoking in outdoor public places, including parks, playgrounds, city property and within 25 feet of a transit stop.
"This is kind of a wave that has been passing all over the county and we're sort of on the tail end," Mayor Kelvyn Cullimore said during a recent public hearing.
The east-side suburb joins several other cities - including Salt Lake City, Holladay, Draper and West Valley City - as well as Salt Lake County in banning cigarettes from public areas due to the health hazards of secondhand smoke.

Board of Health Takes First Steps to Ban Smoking in Parks

The Utah County Board of Health voted unanimously Monday to begin working with cities to ban or at least limit smoking in parks across the county.

Board members concluded that limiting smoking in parks was a good idea but were not sure how to go about instituting it. Despite having the power and authority to prohibit smoking in parks, they did not want to force a rule onto cities.

The board's decision followed a presentation by Jen Tischler, who works with tobacco prevention and control in the Utah County Health Department. Members of OUTRAGE, a local youth anti-tobacco group, joined Tischler.

Utah County park smoking ban in sight: Board of Health votes to draft an ordinance, but will run the idea past city mayors first

The county Board of Health voted Monday to draft an ordinance that would ban smoking in public parks, but not until it has presented the idea to the county Council of Governments in June. The council is made up of mayors of cities and towns in the county.

Board member and Orem Mayor Jerry Washburn said cities would be supportive of a county mandate "if they feel they're part of the decision."

The board voted unanimously after a presentation from Jen Tischler, a health department education specialist and adviser to the Outrage anti-smoking youth group. TischÂler said her group surveyed 5,112 people - roughly 1 percent of Utah County's population - and found that 58 percent favored an outright ban on smoking in public parks.
