No Smoking Day 2007 - 14 March: Don't say it with flowers - say 'make a fresh start'

Two thirds of smokers want to stop and 83% wish they had never started smoking in the first place. No Smoking Day research with smokers has shown that people want to quit before they get ill but that the stench, the grime and the cost are everyday reminders about why they want to stop.

This year’s theme is about making a fresh start. It’s about making a change that improves the whole of your life. The campaign image reflects the stark difference between a smoke-filled and smoke-free life. . . .

Is there any action on smoke free environments in Gibraltar?

Yes, The Health Promotion Group has presented a 20-point plan to government on the issue of working towards a smoke free society. However, this has been ongoing since 2004 with little support or consideration.

No Smoking Day in Gibraltar

A stand at the ICC foyer will mark No Smoking Day 2007 on 14th March at 10.00 – 13.30. Literature will be available as well as advice from various health professionals.

765,000 cigarette haul on QE2 loaded in Gibraltar

A spectacular haul of 765,000 cigarettes have been found hidden onboard the QE2 luxury liner on return to Britain from a Mediterranean cruise. A crew member has been arrested.

HM Customs told PANORAMA that the cigarettes had been loaded in Gibraltar and duty had been evaded. . . .

As a result of the discovery, Customs Officers questioned a 41 year-old crew member “and established that the cigarettes had not been ordered and paid for by the ship but had been paid for in cash at a cost of over £31,000.”

OLIVERO: Government's new law to protect young from alcohol and tobacco falls short of expectations

The Government's new Bill, the Children and Young Persons (Alcohol. Tobacco and Gaming) Ordinance 2006, falls short of expectations.

The initial reaction to this new legislation must be one of welcomed news, particularly because of the many concerns regarding these social problems that have increased substantially over recent years.

When closely reading this new proposed Ordinance there is great disappointment in many areas, which could have seen the introduction of many other statutory measures, important measures that have been omitted, particularly on the drug abuse problem. . . .

The important matter concerning the prohibition of sale of alcohol and tobacco to persons under 16 years, an age group that Government have introduced in the new Ordinance is a major and crucial issue and one which I believe is going to be a big mistake. . . .

What reasoning is behind not introducing in Gibraltar an 18 year old age limit on the consumption at least of alcohol

OLIVERO: Government to introduce new laws on alcohol, tobacco and gambling

The Government is considering introducing new and updated legislation in an attempt to stem the worrying and growing concern with alcohol abuse in Gibraltar, tobacco use and sales - and gambling laws are also in line for change.

This is welcome news of course, I have for the last two years been campaigning for these socially soul-destroying substances to come under the scrutiny and consideration of the Government's law draftsman. . . .

Alcohol and tobacco abuse has become such an important and concerning social and health issue in Europe that countries are implementing these community safety measures with a seriousness and frequency of action that really be- fits this disturbing and dangerous problem on modern society.

My concern is that we may end up with a half baked law which has as much life, forward thinking and planning as a undertakers convention, so please lets get it right. Combating drug abuse that includes alcohol and tobacco is all about changing attitudes, protecting the community, particularly the vulnerable sections like the young. Let's not make it easy for them, we must have a range of measures that will maximise the potential to reduce harm to the community as a whole, what other consideration can there be to this important social problem?

Now... Spain says Gibraltar does not cooperate on money laundering, drugs and tobacco smuggling and fraud

Gibraltar does not cooperate with the Spanish authorities in the fight against money laundering and drugs, says the Spanish Government.

This comes from the top in the Spanish interior ministry.

The minister, Jose Antonio Alonso, said so in a parliamentary question.

The cooperation of Gibraltar with the Guardia Civil has been practically nil, in the Guardia Civil's investigations of money laundering, tobacco smuggling or fraud, said the Spanish minister, who adds that such cooperation has been sought through various avenues such as 'commissions rogatoire' and financial intelligence units.

The minister was asked about the recent 'Ballena Blanca' money laundering operation as well as other such operations in the Costa del Sol.

There has been no cooperation with UK or Gibraltar authorities as regards the 'Ballena Blanca' operation, and in other operations there is no evidence of the participation or cooperation of the Gibraltar authorities, said the reply.

Gibraltar is losing the drugs war

GIBRALTAR'S old reputation as a smuggling centre is at risk of being revived as Spanish smugglers turn to violence during trips across its waters to pick up drugs in North Africa.

Armed only with wooden batons, the Royal Gibraltar Police are powerless to prevent the traffic when faced with the flares, harpoon guns and knives of the drug smugglers. Their boats have been ridden over by smugglers and there is little they can do to respond.

The Gibraltar government wishes to play down the issue, fearing that the drug trade will tarnish its current status as an economically successful, tightly-controlled zone. The Chief Minister of Gibraltar, Peter Caruana, has successfully altered the town's former image as a den of smugglers and a shady tax haven.

SPAIN Accuses GIBRALTAR of being Haven for Crime

Spain threatened Friday to impose even tougher measures on Gibraltar unless action is taken to fight crime they say is rampant in the disputed British colony.

Spanish officials said Foreign Minister Abel Matutes will press those complaints with British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook when they meet in Luxembourg on Sunday to discuss a dispute that has already led to increased border controls with Gibraltar. . . Spanish authorities accuse Gibraltar of running a "parasite economy" and failing to prevent use of the tiny territory for drug trafficking, tobacco smuggling, money laundering and other shady financial dealings.
