Williams decided to participate in a study to compare the habits of smoking to the craving for nicotine.
She smoked nicotine-free cigarettes, proving that the urge to light up can be stronger than the need for a nicotine fix.
"It's really a craving for the whole behavior, especially with something like cigarette smoking, (which) presents a rich context of sensory cues and habit components," said Dr. Jed Rose, a nicotine researcher.
Researchers said that if you use nicotine-replacement therapies like the patch and gum with nicotine-free cigarettes, it's a combination for success.
