SPECIAL Revenue Protection Services (SPRS) personnel on Sunday exchanged gunfire with suspected smugglers of Supermatch cigarettes worth sh4m. The incident took place at Kigalama village in Namutumba sub-county, Iganga district at about 1.30pm.

Samuel Kigula, an SPRS operative who was on duty that day, said they mounted a checkpoint at Mpologoma bridge but when the smugglers saw it, they drove past it at a very high speed, overrunning the sign post.

During the scuffle that ensued, bullets were fired back and forth, injuring one of the suspects identified as Herbert Hayonjo on the head.

The intercepted Toyota Corolla, which had been packed with eight cartons of Supermatch cigarettes, was towed to Iganga Police station.
