Cigarette law hits pubs

Smokers are finding buying cigarettes a little less convenient since legislation banning cigarette machines from public areas, restaurants and pubs came into force last month.

Act CIII of 1997 on Excise Taxes and Special Regulations on the Marketing of Excise Goods was passed by the Finance Ministry in an effort to prevent access to tobacco products by under 18s.

ESMA Spanyol-Magyar Reklám Kft, the advertising agency which supplies most machines, said a four-year transition period had allowed them to deal smoothly with the restrictions. "We have been able to convert most of our machines to sell other products," said Gusztáv Felméry, ESMA’s Strategy and Business Development Director.
