Intro:

Star Scientific, Inc. (NASDAQ:STSI) issued the following statement by Paul L. Perito, Esquire, Star's Chairman, President and Chief Operating Officer: "We are gratified that Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation(1), as announced yesterday, has undertaken a broad test market of its low-nitrosamine Advance(R) cigarette.

The initial Advance(R) cigarette was jointly developed with B&W. When Star test-marketed Advance(R) last fall, it was the first conventional premium cigarette made available to adult consumers that contained all low-nitrosamine tobacco and an innovative carbon/acetate filter, and that also included expanded health warnings and comparative content information. We are pleased that B&W is continuing the practice of providing purchasers with comparative content information in "onserts" affixed to the product packaging. B&W's decision to move to the next level with Advance(R) demonstrates the commercial viability of the StarCured(TM) tobacco curing process which consistently produces flue-cured tobacco with the lowest levels of tobacco specific nitrosamines ("TSNAs")(2) in the world."
