Intro:

City council underwent a major facelift yesterday, with five of 14 wards becoming fiefdoms for new aldermen.

As expected, the infusion of fresh blood came with the resignations of aldermen Joanne Kerr, David Bronconnier, Bev Longstaff, Jon Lord and Sue Higgins.

All seven aldermanic incumbents engaged in battle fended off challenges from a total of 59 hopefuls. . .

Another smouldering challenge will be amending the city's current smoking bylaw, with aldermen either passing or rejecting legislation that would bar minors from designated smoking areas. . .

While the dynamics of a new council isn't expected to significantly alter the course of the Enmax saga, the smoking debate could well swirl in different directions.
