Several Bolivian ministers traveled to Washington Friday amid concerns about the health of President Hugo Banzer, who was hospitalized there with a lung tumor.

Bolivia's major newspapers Friday carried stories claiming that the tumor was cancerous, and the Catholic Church's radio station said that ``reliable sources in the government have confirmed the president has widespread, developed cancer.''

But government officials refused to elaborate on the president's condition beyond saying that he has a tumor on his left lung.

``The trip is basically to find out more about what has happened, as well as to update the president on what is going on in Bolivia,'' said Vice Minister of Information Hernan Terrazas.

Banzer, 75, is at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, where doctors have called for a stay of at least 30 more days for treatment.
