Intro:

The graphic pictorial health warnings have been controversially introduced in Canada and branded by some as medical pornography.

Their introduction here would significantly up the ante from text warnings which cover a third of a cigarette packet.

But the Ministry of Health says that while it has asked for the power to introduce pictorial warnings, it would do so only after public consultation.

A regulation allowing for the warnings is to be included in new supplementary order papers to the Smokefree Environment (Enhanced Protection) Amendment Bill before parliament.

Those papers, being considered by Labour and Alliance caucuses, also seek to ban smoking in bars, except in enclosed designated smoking areas.
