Cigarette sales decline at fastest rate in a decade

more Californians are snuffing out cigarettes, according to a report released Tuesday.

Californians bought 8.1 percent fewer cigarettes in 2009-10, compared to a year ago -- the largest annual decline since 1999-2000, when the decrease was 11.2 percent, according to a state Board of Equalization report released Tuesday.

Cigarette sales have declined 66 percent since 1980, considered the peak of smoking in the Golden State.
