Don’t plan on lighting up Thursday at the La Porte County Fair. Local students plan to participate in the Tobacco Prevention Council’s Smoke Free Day there.

Under the Safe Harbor program, Michigan City middle- and high-school students have been focusing on peer education and prevention by participating in the VOICE tobacco advocacy groups. VOICE is a group for students who are anti-smoking. It is supported by the Indiana Tobacco Prevention Council. The students participated in Kick Butts Day in March and World No Tobacco Day in May.

“They have so much passion and initiative that they want to get the word out to their peers that smoking is bad for you,” said Sandy Gleim, Healthy Communities of La Porte executive director.
