Fire victim was smoking near oxygen tank, investigator says

An Evansville fire investigator has determined that a fatal East Side fire Sunday resulted from the victim smoking while using an oxygen tank.

Mary Edith Welch, 80, died of smoke inhalation Sunday morning at her home at 3119 Washington Ave.

The owner of the home and Welch's daughter, Susie Hanson, 57, said the fire broke out just after 6 a.m. . . .

Fire Investigator Jesse Storey said it appears the fire began when Welch attempted to smoke while using oxygen.
