Intro: Sooner or later, public pressure will convince the holdouts that it’s time to let go and smoke only outdoors or on their own private premises.
In the meantime, the Corpus Christi Police Department seems to have the right attitude about the smoking ban. When people complain about violations of the law, the police should investigate and warn or cite lawbreakers. But there’s no pressing need to make bars and nightclubs a hostile environment. The police have more important things to do than raid local businesses to bust smokers.
Nor is it the job of the bar owners to enforce the smoking ban, though it’s smart of them to warn their smoking patrons that they could be fined.
The real burden of this law falls on private citizens who want clean air. The more complaints the police receive about smoking ban violations, the more citations will be issued – and the sooner local smokers will realize that the world has changed.
