Intro:

Experts have started creating an online archive of more than 20,000 objects from one of the most important firms in Nottingham's history.

The items from John Player & Sons include adverts, packaging and enamel signs from the 1890s to the 1980s.

The tobacco firm opened its first factory in the city in 1877.

The project by Nottingham University and Nottingham City Museums and Galleries will document each item in an online resource.

Professor Liz Harvey, head of the School of History at the University of Nottingham, said: "These advertising images instantly evoke past worlds, ranging from Edwardian Britain to the 1960s, in which Player's marketed its brands as part of the consumer culture of its day.
