Intro: NATIONAL CITY -- Firefighters are working to extinguish a fire at a retirement home on South Highland Avenue near East 25th Street tonight, officials said.
. . .
One of the tenants started the fire by smoking in his bed. He could not put it out. He was transported to UCSD with 2nd burns and difficulty breathing. Many other tenants were displaced, some with medical issues, not sure if fire/smoke related, from the evacuation, from the stress, or simply being off any machines they were on. The 3rd floor had about 3-4 rooms with damage, and the water sprinklers did their job, but there was major water damage (water leaking down onto the 1st floor).
Why on earth is a facility like that allowing patients or tenants, to smoke in their beds????????
