Intro: Property owners can be subject to legal action from tenants who are not being protected from secondhand smoke, according to a local group. The Lincoln County Tobacco Free Coalition has announced its focus on the issue at McKinley Education Center on Thursday.
For many years, tobacco-free organizations worked hard in Nebraska. That hard work eventually culminated in the passage of the Nebraska Clean Indoor Air Act, which took effect in June.
Tobacco Free Lincoln County Coordinator Bonnie Thompson said there is a big difference between the Clean Indoor Air campaign and their new focus on smoking in public housing.
"Our focus is not political and we are not seeking legislative action," said Thompson. "This is simply an educational process for property owners to let them know that they have a legal right to enact no-smoking policies within their housing complexes."
