Intro: Meanwhile, the second cigarette tax increase of the year is to go into effect Wednesday. A bill that puts an additional 25-cent tax on cheaper cigarettes cleared both chambers late Monday and is headed to the governor, who plans to sign it into law.
A 50-cent hike on all cigarettes went into effect earlier this year. Barbour wanted more taxes on smaller companies not participating in the state's 1997 lawsuit settlement with larger manufacturers.
