Erik Augustson, PhD, MPH for the National Cancer Institute said that tobacco dependence is a complex issue and there is no accepted definition but that the process is influenced by a variety of factors:
* Compulsive use despite adverse consequences.
* The drug reinforces behavior.
* There is a predictable pattern of withdrawal.
* Relapse--quitting is hard.
