Intro: One downtown bar and restaurant is breathing easy amid buzz about a new smoking ban in Fond du Lac workplaces.
JR's Sports Bar & Grill, 65 N. Main St., has been a non-smoking establishment since it opened in May. Owners Rachel and Jasen Wise, both nonsmokers, said they wanted their business to have a clean, welcoming environment for everyone, from children to sports fans.
"We're not just another bar," said Rachel, who also manages JR's.
But JR's won't be a novelty for long. Fond du Lac City Council passed a smoke-free ordinance on Oct. 22, barring smoking in all establishments, including taverns. The measure, which is expected to take effect on Jan. 31, has drawn praise from health advocates and ire from bar owners.
Jasen confessed he's not sure how to feel about the new ordinance.
"We kind of liked being unique, but now we're no longer unique,"
