Suspect also dies in 'violent collision' following police pursuit Jump to full article: Ottawa (Ont) Citizen (ca), 2008-11-16 Author: Brendan Kennedy, with files from Cassandra Drudi and Tim Shufelt, The Ottawa Citizen
Intro: Three people are dead after a suspected cigarette smuggler ran through an intersection and slammed into another vehicle after being pursued by police near Cornwall.
The violent collision, which happened around 8 p.m. Friday on Cornwall Island, just north of the U.S. border, killed an elderly couple from New York and the suspect.
Ron Moran, the national president of the Customs and Immigration Union, told the Citizen yesterday that the suspect had been flagged by border intelligence officers conducting anti-smuggling surveillance and was chased by RCMP and Akwesasne Mohawk police before he crashed into a car at an intersection on Akwesasne Mohawk territory.
At some point, the Akwesasne Mohawk police officers called off the chase, he said. But the driver continued at "an extremely high speed," running a stop sign and smashing into another vehicle. . . .
The OPP identified the driver as 21-year-old Dany Gionet of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., 50 kilometres southeast of Montreal. The elderly couple was identified as Edward and Eileen Kassian, both 77, of Massena, New York, about 20 kilometres southwest of Cornwall.
