Okotoks has become the first Alberta community to ban smoking in cars carrying children -- a move that is stirring local controversy but winning praise among advocates who hope the provincial government will follow suit.

As several provinces move toward similar smoking bans, town councillors in Okotoks agreed this week to new rules prohibiting drivers from lighting up with anyone under age 16 in the vehicle.
