Slovak govt OKs cigarette tax hike from Feb 2009

Intro:

The Slovak government approved on Wednesday a rise in excise taxes on cigarettes from February 2009 to comply with EU norms, a move that will increase state revenues this year but curb 2009 budget income.

Under the approved draft, which now needs to be passed by parliament, the minimum tax will rise to 2.45 crowns ($0.124) per cigarette next year, from the current 2.10 crowns. Tobacco tax will stay at 1,930 crowns per kilo.
