Senate OKs bill to prohibit lighting up in bars, restaurants, casinos Jump to full article: Detroit (MI) Free Press, 2008-05-09 Author: CHRIS CHRISTOFF FREE PRESS LANSING BUREAU CHIEF
Intro: the state Senate approved a statewide ban on smoking on all workplaces including bars, restaurants and even casinos.
The bill was more stringent than a House-passed smoking ban and gave a surprising victory to antismoking advocates who have sought a statewide smoking ban for more than a decade.
Nine Republicans joined 16 Democrats to pass the bill, 25-12. It returns to the House, where it could face more opposition to a smoking ban in Detroit's casinos, even though all five Detroit senators voted for the bill.
The Senate ban includes Detroit's three casinos, plus bingo halls and cigar bars. The House version does not.
