The state Senate is scheduled to debate raising the tax today. Most lawmakers are willing to increase the cigarette tax, and polls show most state residents support such a move. The questions are how high to raise the tax and what to do with the revenue it generates.
An increase of about 30 cents per pack would bring the Palmetto State in line with neighboring states. . . .
