A state program is ready to help those who call 800-Try-to-Stop (or, 800-879-8678) and pass a brief screening of medical questions.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health yesterday unveiled its Ready, Set Quit program, which offers a free, two-week supply of nicotine patches to adults (18 and older) smokers who live, work or study in Lowell. The program, which partners with the city and Lowell's Health Alliance, also bolsters the patch's timed dose of nicotine with six free telephone counseling sessions with tobacco treatment specialists.
