Bullhead City Council member Jan Ward is featured on an anti-smoking billboard recently erected along Highway 95 in Mohave Valley.

A lifelong smoker, Ward quit cold turkey almost a year ago. She had made two previous attempts to quit, "the longest being about two years," she said.

Finally, Ward was forced to swear off tobacco after she suffered a stroke last year. This time, she vows, they'll be no going back. "I don't have any choice," Ward said. "I'd die if I do that."

"More than half of all Mohave County households have at least one smoker," said Janie Tinnon, Mohave County Department of Public Health community health educator. "We're hoping there will be a change (due to the advertising campaign) and that more people will look at smoking more seriously," Tinnon said, noting that over 35 percent of county residents smoke.
