Intro:

rford College senior Ben Zussman would stroll through campus before this academic year began and come across people smoking cigarettes on the front porch of the school's historic Founders Hall.

The smokers have since been replaced by rocking chairs that Haverford's first-year president Stephen Emerson frequently uses when holding office hours.

Emerson -- an oncologist by trade -- was successful in creating an informal smoke-free environment there, but his attempt to ban all smoking on campus except in dorms has proven more difficult.

A Smoking Policy Working Group composed of students, faculty and staff is meeting regularly, but a students-only Smoking Policy Committee has sidelined the idea of a campuswide smoking ban in favor of exploring smoke-free housing options.
