Intro: Smoking costs Florida's economy more than $20 billion a year, or nearly $7,000 per smoker, according to a report released Thursday by The Florida Institute for Smoking Cessation.
The report, based on a study by the Washington Economics Group and funded by pharmaceutical company Pfizer Inc., also looked at the costs and benefits of employee-based smoking-cessation programs.
It estimated that each dollar spent on such programs would result in economic gains of $1.90 to $5.75 for employers, insurers and government.
