5. Smoking ban: New Mexico officially became smoke-free - at least indoors - June 15. The 2007 Legislature banned smoking in bars, restaurants, stores and most other indoor workplaces, making New Mexico the 17th state in the nation with a broad, smoke-free policy. At least a dozen New Mexico municipalities already had smoking bans.
