Intro:

Breaking a smoking addiction tends to consistently hit the list of New Year’s resolutions. This year, that resolution might be easier to keep with a new medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration three months ago.

“This is a brand new way to help people stop smoking,” Dr. Wayne Williams with Danville ENT Associates said last week.

The medication is CHANTIX , or varenicline, and is a series of pills smokers take over a 12-week period to reduce the pleasurable sensations received from smoking.

“CHANTIX is a whole new mechanism of action to help people stop smoking and I think it will be revolutionary,” Williams said. “Nicotine is so highly addictive and the desire to smoke is strong.”
