Dozens of prominent health advocates in Ontario want the Dalton McGuinty government to sue big tobacco to recover smoking-related health-care costs.

Garfield Mahood, executive director of the Non-Smokers' Rights Association, said a letter was sent to McGuinty in April and allowed the government a period of time to take action so as to not take attention from the launch of the provincewide smoking ban on May 31.

"We thought they deserved praise on that and we didn't want to spoil the party," Mahood said.

The letter is signed by 109 noted health officials, including 22 medical officers of health and the CEOs of Cancer Care Ontario, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and the Canadian Cancer Society's Ontario division.
