Intro: An indoor smoking ban in prisons across Canada hasn't sparked the violent outbursts its critics predicted, but has persuaded dozens of Winnipeg area inmates to butt out, an assistant warden said yesterday.
Linda Garwood-Filbert of Stony Mountain Institution, just north of Winnipeg, said 42 inmates have completed a program to quit smoking since the institution voluntarily began phasing in an indoor smoking ban on Jan. 18.
A national ban mandated by Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) took effect on Jan. 31.
