Intro: A bid to ban cigarette smoking in Joliet's public places went up in smoke after bar and casino owners voiced opposition.
Councilman Tim Brophy, who began fanning the flames for a Joliet smoking ban after Chicago passed an ordinance in December, snuffed out the proposal earlier this week.
More than 120 people, the majority opposed to additional smoking restrictions, crowded a Monday council committee meeting.
After listening to tavern owners and casino executives forecast business losses, Brophy declined to propose a draft ordinance for the council.
