Actor Suresh Gopi has declared the proposed ban on smoking in movies as an immature decision.

Speaking at a Meet-the-Press programme at the Press Club in Kollam on Monday a, Suresh Gopi opined that it was absurd to think that films were promoting smoking in society. The only way to dissuade smoking is the effective implementation of laws, he said.

Â"Why are the movies alone targeted while many other problems are remaining to be tackled? Why is no action taken against the unhealthy trends in TV programmes and obscene hoardings advertising the undergarments of women?,Â" he asked.

When his attention was drawn to the posters of his new film in which he was seen smoking, Suresh Gopi said that though the ban would come into force only from October 2 this year, he did not light the cigar in the film.
