Intro:

A man is burned, and about 20 people in eight families are out of a home, after a fire about 11:30 p.m. Monday. The fire was at an eight-unit apartment complex at 625 E. Pacific St.

When Springfield firefighters arrived, one man was trapped inside the building. He escaped with minor burns and smoke inhalation. All other residents were able to get out okay. . . .

Firefighters say it was careless smoking that started the fire. It started when a mattress on a porch caught fire, then a jug of gasoline blew up and spread throughout the complex.
