Intro: THE Inverness-based Publican Party, which is contesting the General Election on the basis of its opposition to a ban on smoking in public places, has won unexpected backing from The Health Shop.
The Baron Taylor Street store is one of 20 city centre business endorsing the fledgling party in an advertisement in today's Inverness Courier.
In a successful move by the previously singleissue party to reach out to independent traders, the advertisment states:
"Will the last business leaving the city centre please turn out the lights!" adding: "Vote Publican Party."
Health shop owner Martin Sellar acknowledged he was an unlikely supporter. . . .
He was persuaded to endorse the party because it was providing a voice for the smaller firms in Inverness which he felt should be given a business rates holiday.
"We've been ignored for so long, " he said. "There are some new ideas in the new town centre plans and I'm very positive about that. It's just a pity some are falling by the wayside."
He was also against the nanny state.
