Intro: Township officials may press the Legislature to adopt statewide smoking restrictions as they hash out details on an ordinance that could ban smoking in township bars, restaurants and workplaces.
The Township Committee at its rescheduled Saturday meeting authorized the township attorney to draft a resolution supporting possible statewide legislation, which Mayor Larry Fink likened to laws restricting cell phone use while driving.
"Rather than a piecemeal approach of having individual municipalities pass bans that would have differing regulations and possibly conflict with one another . . . it might make better sense for the state to promulgate a regulation that was uniform," Fink said Sunday.
