More than 100 large-scale cigarette buyers could face criminal charges as part of a state investigation of Internet purchases by people trying to elude state taxes.

The individuals are suspected of buying 300 or more cartons of untaxed cigarettes in a year, with three or more different brands purchased, said Terry Stanton, spokesperson for the Treasury Department.

Their names have been turned over to the State Police for investigation of possible felony charges, Stanton said Friday.

Shanon Akans, a Michigan State Police spokesperson, said no details are being released about the 120 suspects under criminal investigation.

They're in more hot water than 533 others who are only getting notices from the state to pay back taxes on cigarettes bought over the Internet. Those buyers do not face criminal charges.
