BRIDGET Jones's cigsand-booze image may have a lot to answer for.

The cinema screen and glossy mags can be a powerful factor in shaping young lives, researchers claim.

They say images in magazines and films of smoking and drinking as in Bridget Jones's Diary and drug-taking have an impact on behaviour.

In fact, surveys of almost 600 schoolchildren and young people concluded that such images had a greater effect on what they ended up doing than anything others might say to them.

Lead researcher Professor Paschal Sheeran, from the University of Sheffield, said the visual impressions could affect people without them even knowing it.

His research, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, dismisses the idea that images in advertising and the mass media including pictures of slim young women have no influence on those who see them.
