Hong Kong plans wider smoking ban

Intro:

Hong Kong plans to extend a ban on smoking to bars, restaurants and offices to protect the public from second-hand smoke, joining a growing list of cities worldwide outlawing people from lighting up in crowded places.

The government first proposed the wider ban in 2001 but met fierce resistance from businesses, which are highly influential in Hong Kong politics.

Now Hong Kong health chief York Chow says enough time has been spent on debate and he will introduce the smoke-ban bill during the current legislative session.
