The report by the Malta Standards Authority technical committee on air quality in bars and restaurants was presented to Health Minister Louis Deguara yesterday.

The report was commissioned by the ministry after the Chamber of Small and Medium Enterprises (GRTU) insisted there existed equipment that purified the air so that it would not pose a health hazard.

The committee decided there was not enough evidence showing that any air cleaning system was effective enough.

On Thursday, standardisation directorate engineer Michael Cassar, who was in charge of the committee, told The Times the decision taken was that entertainment establishments would have to have a separate smoking room or be wholly non-smoking.
