SMOKING on Melbourne and Sydney's iconic beaches may be outlawed, but other local governments around the nation are resisting the push to ban cigarettes on the sand.

Manly Council has banned smoking on its popular northern Sydney beaches, and the shire's neighbours in Pittwater has indicated it will follow suit.

Waverley Council in Sydney's east, which takes in Bondi Beach, last night voted for a beach smoking ban and Melborne's Port Phillip Council, which has responsibility for St Kilda beach, is considering a similar move.

However, other councils are less inclined to follow suit, saying that it would be too difficult to police.

The mayors of Cottesloe Council in Western Australia (Cottesloe Beach), Holdfast Bay in South Australia (Glenelg Beach), Noosa and the Gold Coast in Queensland all said that they had no such plans. "We've got quite enough for our beach inspectors to do without inflicting this on them," said Cottesloe Mayor Rob Rowell.
