Intro:

Dust and surfaces in a smoker's home are a significant source of passive smoking by babies, it is reported today.

In just a few weeks infants can be exposed to tobacco fumes equivalent to several hours of active adult smoking, say scientists.

Parents who smoke outside reduce the risk faced by babies but do not completely protect them.

The research, by Prof Georg Matt and colleagues at San Diego State University and published in the journal Tobacco Control, was based on a study of 49 babies aged between two and 13 months, and their mothers.

The team measured nicotine levels in dust, air and on surfaces, and levels in urine of cotinine - a chemical by-product of nicotine.
