Intro: Sen. Brent Hill brought his family a daughter-in-law and grandchild to the state Capitol Tuesday, enlisting their help in what has become a personal crusade against second-hand smoking.
Hill's son, Ritchie, 28, has lung cancer, and his family says it could have come only from second-hand smoke. And Ritchie Hill has to pass through "a wall of smoke" to get hospital treatment, the senator said at a Statehouse news conference attended by daughter-in-law Stacey and granddaughter Allie, 4.
Hill, a Republican from Rexburg, wants to ban smoking in all restaurants, taxi cabs, retail stores and offices open to the public. This bill would keep people from smoking within 20 feet of entrances to schools, hospitals, libraries, airports, arenas and concert halls. Bars and bowling alleys would be exempt from the ban.
