New year is best time to quit smoking

One source of help is the Wisconsin Tobacco Quit Line, Carlson said. According to a survey conducted last year by Pacific Marketing Inc., calling the Quit Line can quadruple a person's chance of quitting successfully.

Since the Quit Line began in May 2001, more than 27,000 Wisconsin residents have called to find help for themselves or their family or friends, according to a news release. More than 5,600 smokers who have called the line have quit. It is run by the University of Wisconsin Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention and the state.
